I had a lot of fun this semester of photography class. Our class has done so many different projects and each of them has shown me something new about photography. A lot of our projects were collaborative projects, like Light Graffiti. I didn’t even know that it was even possible to draw with light using a camera before this class. I have had a lot of fun with all the projects I’ve completed and they drove me to take pictures outside of school. This class completely changed the perspective of photography. It is so much more than taking a picture. I had never really thought about what it takes to be a photographer and to take good photos. It is much harder than I would have originally imagined, but also more entertaining. I think that it is really fun to use these techniques to improve my photos. I now use what I have learned when I’m taking any photo and it has definitely improved the quality of my photos. My favorite project that we have done this semester was the macro. I loved how you could make any person that looks at the photo only look at one thing. I also liked taking close up pictures because they looked as our generation says “aesthetically pleasing”. I think I will most definitely take photography next year in the 9th grade its a fun and creative thing that I like to do. In conclusion, this is the best elective I had ever chosen in the 3 years that I have had to choose an elective. Here is the link to my scavenger hunt photos. Here are my
Getting Up Close
In this project, I had to take close up pictures of 5 things that are living and 5 objects. We had to switch the setting on the camera or phone to Macro so that the camera could know that we are trying to take close up pictures, and focus on the objects. What worked for me in this project was using an app called VSCO. VSCO had this feature to where you could make the photo focus on an object or person and blur out the rest of the photo and make you focus on one thing. Something that I never tried before is finding new ways to edit a photo on VSCO because you could change everything in the photo like the contrast, saturation the clarity and more. One challenge for me was trying to get close enough to make it focus and not blurry. Another challenge was finding objects to take pictures of and make sure it was interesting and not plain and boring. If I had the equipment, time and ability to take a picture of something up close. I would take a picture of a busy road in New York city or a mountain. You can find the rest of my photos Here.
Set In The Street
In this project, we built a kitchen set in the middle of our schools hallway. This idea was taken from the photographer Justin Bettman. His idea was to place photography sets in public. After we set all the walls up, we took turns bringing props and took pictures of different scenes that can happen in a real kitchen. After that we edited the pictures in photoshop to resemble the pictures that Carrie Mae Weems took. Carrie Mae Weems is a photographer that took different pictures of scenes that could happen or have happened, at a kitchen table. I first turned the photo black and white, then I zoomed out used the elliptical marquee to circle the top of the photo to make it darker. Then I went to modify and changed the feather to 225, then in modify I hit the inverse button. After that I clicked the graph button and dragged the line until the top of the photo was dark enough. If I could choose any place to tell my family’s story, I would also probably choose a kitchen table, because we always use it as a family, and we come together. You would definitely see pictures of me and brother laughing or me being upset because he said something rude or he made fun of me. Also you would see my mom talking to me about my day went and my grades (the grades is the scary part) when my brother is off in college. You can find the rest of my photos Here.
Action
For this project, we had to capture a moment of action in a photo, but there wasn’t supposed to be any blur. To take a picture of someone in action or doing something I used “burst” (Which is holding down the white button in the middle of the screen). Also Taking pictures at a closer angle looked better than father because there could be more blur if you took a picture from a far. I tried not to use boring angles such as just straight forward angles I tried getting angles that were different from others. Also going outside and taking pictures worked very well for me because natural sunlight or light looks way better than if you were taking pictures outside. If you were going to do this assignment you should definitely use burst mode on your iphone or if your using a camera set your shutter speed so it could take pictures faster. I would like to photograph football because you could catch crazy tackles people toppling over each other I would get great photographs each time. You can find the rest of my photos Here.
7 Days
Then I Asked Them To Smile
The most difficult part of this project was finding people to take pictures of and keeping a serious face when I go up to ask someone if I can take their picture. I am a person that laughs and smiles a lot so I can never keep a serious face. What was also difficult was finding different poses or positions. Also finding good lighting. Some people had major changes from their facial expressions when they smiling, but others didn’t have much of a change in their photos. When people would smile the first thing you would think about them is that they are friendly and nice so most likely you go talk to them. When they were not smiling you would think that they are mad, mean, or just having a very bad day. If I was a photographer I would ask my client if they feel comfortable with me taking their photo. You can see the rest of my photos Here
Light Graffiti
My group took our pictures in our school’s main gym. Turned off all the lights so it would be pitch black so the camera could take in as much light from our flashlights as possible. On the camera’s setting, we had to leave the shutter open for as long as possible. We also had to put the ISO on the lowest setting it could go to make the background dark as possible. We used IPhone flashlights, glow sticks, colored lights, colored picture from google. First we figured out what we were going to be drawing also the pose of the person. Secondly was taking and drawing the actual picture and creating an image. What worked for my group was having multiple people drawing behind the person. Also pointing the flashlight right at the camera not away from it. What didn’t really work was it was very difficult to think of a design and try being creative and different from others. The frustrating part of this project was not having enough time to get more designs as we wanted to. Also the time limit on the camera. I could have done this after school and done a bigger picture with my own camera. Also, you could have made a little movie. In conclusion, I have learned some cool things during this project. Rule Of Thirds
My favorite photo is a picture that I took of trees that looked as if they were in a straight line. My other favorite photo is a picture of Bebe one of my classmates jumping. What worked is positioning my camera or phone in a straight direction. Also trying to make the photo interesting like when my class had to edit a photo to make you look on direction then the other. Also using the graph or “lines” on my iPhone camera. What didn’t work was when I took pictures on my camera because I didn’t have a manual mode so the graph or “lines” weren’t there so I had to guess where the lines would be. The graph lines were to help me with the rule of thirds project. Its called the rule of thirds because they are 3 rows of 3 large boxes which make 9 boxes in total. The graph is to help you make the picture more dramatic and make you focus on a certain things. In conclusion, this project has taught me a new technique called the rule of thirds. Portraits Black Backround
For this project, I had to use a camera and learn how to change the ISO to make it look like there was a black background behind the person I was taking pictures of. Also, I had to change the shutter speed so it can stay open for a longer amount of time so as you can let in more darkness from the room. The thing that worked for me was the position that the person was in and the color of the clothes the person was wearing. What didn’t work was in some pictures the light way too bright to where you couldn’t see the person. Also, the lighting had to face directly at the person you would be taking pictures of. The further and higher the light is the better the picture will turn out if you have the light to close it might make the picture too bright to where you would see shadows. Portraits White Background
For this project I had to use a camera and learn how to change the ISO to make it look like there wasn’t a white background behind the person I was taking pictures of.Also I had to change the shutter speed so it can stay open for a longer amount of time so as you can let in as much light as possible. The thing that worked for me was the position that the person was in and the color of the clothes the person was wearing. Also putting the pictures in black an white worked as well. What didn’t work was in some pictures the light way to bright and you couldn’t see the person. Also when the light was facing the white background helped seem as if the person was cropped into the picture. You can see the rest of my photos here.
