Then I Asked Them to Smile

For this project it was difficult for me to be brave enough to ask someone to get a photo of them. I was implicit bias and made assumptions of people I didn’t know. This can affect my job as a photographer because just like in the story, ”Then I Asked Them to Smile,” you can miss your opportunity to take amazing photos with people you don’t know. The people I took pictures of turned out to be really nice and I really enjoyed to talking to them. The changes I saw in myself was that after this assignment, I became less shy. I was able to go up to anybody with confidence and ask for a picture. The changes I saw in the people were major. Some of them didn’t even smile when I saw them at first. All of these people’s smiles lit up the whole room and they seemed so much nicer. When I asked my client/subject to take a photo of them, I asked nicely and with respect. If they said no and didn’t feel comfortable I thanked them anyway. Click here to see my project, here

Then I Asked Them to Smile

Something that was difficult for this project was to find 15 people because I knew a lot of people in the school already. In some pairs of photos, the changes I saw were amazing. I would talk to the smiling person, but not the serious person because they looked intimidating. A bias could affect my job as a photographer by judging someone off my first glance and deciding to not take a photo of them. Some questions I would ask to take fair photos could be asking my client to have a serious face and to smile. Also, for them to stay in the same position while taking the photos.

Rule of Thirds

For Rule of Thirds I had to take pictures using the grid setting on my phone to take pictures with a lot of space to make you look around and not just at one object. It was hard to find interesting backgrounds so there would be more than one thing to look at. It was easy to find a good subject for the picture. At the beginning I thought it would be harder than it looked but it became easier once I did it. The link for the rest of my pictures is here.

Dark Portraits

  •  Mr. Fitz brought in black backgrounds to take our pictures in front of. Once we took the pictures, Mr. Fitz uploaded them to our computers. Then we uploaded them to photo shop and edited them so that they would be black infinite backgrounds. Putting the lights on us and not  the background helped us edit the pictures with less work. We had to retake some of the pictures because we had accidentally pointed the light at the camera. The rest of the pictures are here.

Below are some of the pictures I messed around with while working through this.  I am still learning and want to continue to learn during this project. Be serious, be artsy, goof around, and just keep trying

Light Graffiti

In this project, My group and I had to stand in front of the camera in the dark gym. We had to keep the ISO settings low to let in the least amount of light, so that the flashlight can contrast the darkness. We set a timer, about 20 seconds, to take the picture, so that we would have enough time to draw a picture. What worked in this project was that we were able to get good quality pictures and use different colors to draw with. What didn’t work was that there were some finger prints on the camera, so it made the pictures smudged. What would be cool would be to add different elements of colors. Rule of thirds

What worked is having access to a phone that had the grid lines there, so my picture could be more lined up. What didn’t work is making sure there was a good scenery and that it was also in line or went with the rule of thirds. My thoughts of rule of thirds changed from the beginning because now I know that it is to match up with the grid lines.  There was two lines going horizontal and two lines going vertical I centered the picture to fit in with those lines. You can find the rest of my pictures here

Light Graffiti

I took my pictures by putting the camera to manual and the shutter speed to 15 seconds. We had to use our phone light to make the images. What worked is having multiple lights what didn’t work was trying to different things with the light sometimes because it would be harder to do sharper lines because the light follows every movement so there would be a dragged line. That was also a frustration because when we move after finishing the image we want there are extra lines from when we moved. If we were to take this to the next level we would probably need more shutter speed time and more people so we can have more details to the scene. You can find more of my pictures here.

Rule of Thirds

The objective of this project was to take a picture and make the object in the center of attention by putting it on the intercept of the thirds grid. The difficult part was to align the picture so it looks centered at the same time putting the object on the intercept. The easy part was finding places since there’s a lot of places with open ends. The photos I took are below.

Rule Of Thirds

In the rule of thirds projects some things that worked where taking the photos there wasn’t really a lot of things that didn’t work. In the beginning of the project i didn’t really understand how but it changed because i started to understand it more. When i was taking a my pictures of the person I made sure i had a nice background for people can focus on.

Light Graffiti

The objective of this project was to make words, pictures, or images in the dark using a special filter on the camera. The hard part was writing words since you had to know how to write them backwards. Editing the photo was pretty easy like changing the contrast and controlling how bright the light should be. My 6 images are taken below.
