This project is a project that makes it seem like you are in an enclosed area, when really, you are taking the photo in a public area. The photographer were Jake (Me), Afeef, and Maynor. I used the hue graph to make the top of the photos darker, so it looked like an actual room. If I had a place to tell my family’s story, it would be in the living room, because that’s where we spend most of our time, usually on our phones.
“Set in the Street” is a photography project that is inspired by New York based photographer Justin Bettman. The idea behind “Set in the Street” is to create a photography set in a public space that doesn’t really have anything to do with the set that is being used for the project. We were supposed to create a photography set in a public space. We used a kitchen scene to portray that. We did dogs playing poker by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. You can find all my pictures here.
“Set in the Street” is a photography project that is inspired by New York based photographer Justin Bettman. The idea behind “Set in the Street” is to create a photography set in a public space that doesn’t really have anything to do with the set that is being used for the project. In the fall of 2018 the set was inspired by the work of Carrie Mae Weems and her Kitchen Table Project. Some of the photo shop tools we used to edit it is; Black and white, Curves, Exposure, Vibrancy, Brightness and Contrast, and last but not least Hue and Saturation.

Our photography project was inspired by a New York photographer, Justin Bettman. “Set in the street” our job was to put together a set in a random place, in our case we used the school. The set was also inspired by Carrie Mae Weems. an artist who uses multiple techniques in her images such as fabrics and digital audio. Editing the photos took some to little effort. We used Photoshop, First I needed to make a big elliptical marquee, after I placed it where I wanted, select, modify and clicked feather. Final steps were select, inverse, and play with the curves to my desire. This affect made a drastic affect on the lighting in this picture. My family and I are always going to church together, usually on a late Wednesday night. A perfect place where all of us are together and look ready to take pictures. Here are the rest of my photos.
For this project I had to take pictures at a “dinner table” that told a story. This project was inspired by Justin Bettman who had sets of places in his studio and he would photograph them. this project was also inspired by Carrie Mae. She took pictures in her home at her kitchen table and the picture told her “story”. I edited my photos using the cropping tool, the b &w tool, and the selecting tool. For the selecting tool, I had to go to inverse,feather, and 200 to get a shadow over the lamp. If I took pictures in my house I would take them in the kitchen. A lot of stuff happens in the kitchen like homework, eating, cooking, etc. It would be cool to have a real shadow instead of photo shopping one in.
This project is called Set In The Street. There were two photographers this project was based on, Justin Bettman and Carrie Mae Weems. Justin Bettman creates a set in a random public place, then takes a picture that makes it seem like the people in the picture are in a house (not in some random public place). Carrie Mae Weems creates pictures with “table scenes” (things you would usually do at a table). For this project, we created a table set in the middle of our school. After taking the pictures I used photoshop to edit them and make them black and white. If I had to choose one place to tell my family’s story, it would probably be my dining room table. Many things have happened at that table. Anyways, here are my other photos.
This project is based around a kitchen table in a place or location where someone built a set and a person takes a picture while set zoomed in and one zoomed out. Each person in our group took one of the picture ( Lauren, Ella, and Emilia ). To edit my pictures, I used photo shop. The tools I used in photo shop, to edit my pictures was the feather tool, as well as the lasso to darken the picture at the top. If I had to choose a location to take pictures to tell my families story, I would choose our second living room. If I took pictures with my family, you would see me watching TV with my two dogs on my lap. Another picture you would see is, my parents sitting on the couch eating dinner, and me sitting on the floor eating my dinner.
In this project, I set up a kitchen table scene in where we pose different themes and emotions to take pictures. This project was inspired by 2 artists named Justin Bettman and Carrie Mae Weems. Justin’s inspiration on this project was his “Set in the Street” where he set up scenes on the street to make it look like they were actually in that scene and for our case, a kitchen table. That brings me to Carrie Mae Weems where she took pictures at her actual kitchen table and with her family. We made a replica of that scene and put it “on the street” (in a hallway). To edit my photos, I used the black and white option and the brightness and contrast option in PhotoShop. If I had a place to tell my family’s story, I would choose our kitchen. The kitchen is where most of us love to be because we cook and bake a lot. The pictures would probably just be us cooking or baking.
For this assignment, we built a set in the street of a kitchen table. We were inspired by the set in the street photographer, Justin Bettman. He creates sets to take photos in that look like they would be indoors but in reality are often in the middle of a city. You can find his photos here. We were also inspired by Carrie Mae Weems who is known for her Kitchen Table photos. She takes photos around her kitchen table depicting scenarios that have happened in her home. You can find her photos here. When editing these photos we used the black and white tool, the elliptical marquee tool, and curves, to create the lighting look as shown in Carrie Mae Weems photos. If my family were to do this, our photos would be around our countertop which is where many events have taken place. Below are some of the photos I took or helped to create along with a zoomed out photo of the set in the street.
In this project, my sister and I had to take pictures at our kitchen table, and we had to tell a story using props. We did this project with goals to replicate Carrier May Weems. Carrie May Weems took pictures at her kitchen table reviving important memories that happened there. We also tried to replicate Justin Bettman and his pictures that he took. Justin took pictures by having a set in the street, but when he took a picture, it was like they were inside a house.
After we took our pictures, we used Photoshop to make it look more realistic and we made the picture black and white. First, we had to use the elliptical marque tool to select the space we want to modify. Then, we modify it and feather it o we can change the lighting in specific places to make it look like the light from the lamp is realistic. Finally, we use the curve layer to change the lighting of the lamp. If I had to choose a place to tell my family’s story, I would choose Krispy Kreme, because after every doctors appointment one of our family members have, we always go to Krispy Kremes together, and we don’t think about the bad things, we just have a good time while eating the most delicious thing in the world.
