Final Post

Overall, I liked this photography class. We got to explore many different types of photography and we learned stuff that we didn’t know. I enjoyed this class because I got new learn new skills in photography and I got to take many pictures of different things. During this class, I have also improved in my photography skills as you can tell from this last project. My thought have changed some about photography. This is because i now know that what you see in a picture isn’t always everything that is happening. For example, in this class we did the project called set in the street. And if you just saw the second picture, you would have had no idea that the picture was taken in a school. I definitely have changed the way I take my pictures. For example, I now try to think about rule of thirds and all the camera settings when i’m taking a photo. I also try to take the picture from a unique angle. My favorite project was probably the smile project. This is because for some of the people that I took pictures of, I was a little nervous to go and ask them if I could take a picture of them. But, once they smiled I was glad I had asked because that person ended up being super friendly. However, I don’t think I would want to have photography as my career. I will probably also not take a class in high school because I don’t see it as something that I want to do when i’m older.

Smile

This past week in class we were assigned an assignment called Smile. For this project we were told to go around during Winter Break and take 15 pictures of people smiling and then 15 more of those same people not smiling. The point of this project was to see how your opinion changes of someone when they smile verse when their not smiling. Overall, on some of the pictures that I took, my opinion on the person did change but, on most of the pictures my opinion didn’t change because the people looked the same in both pictures. For example, in the picture on the left, this lady doesn’t look like the person that I would want to approach and start a conversation with because she has a straight face on and it’s not the most inviting face. However, in the picture on the right, I would gladly walk up to this person and start a conversation with her. This is because her smile looks very welcoming and she looks very bright which makes you think that she will be happy to talk to you. If you click the link at the top of the screen you can see all the pictures I took. And on some of those people I was a little nervous to approach because they didn’t look very inviting. But, they turned out to be super nice. Overall, on this project I learned that you shouldn’t judge someone based on how they look at first glance, you should get to know them so that you know the real them.

Newseum

This is a photo of a Boston bombing survivor lying in his hospital bed. He lost his legs in the bombing. This picture was taken by Josh Haner in 2017 and it’s a Pulitzer prize photo. I was drawn to this picture because it stood out to me because he was missing his legs. This picture makes me realize how lucky I am and it makes me fell sad that he lost his legs for no good reason.

This photo is called Hurricane Katrina and it was taken in 2005 by Smiley N. Pool. This is a picture of people on a street trying to get people to notice them, so they can get help. They needed people to help them because the water from the hurricane was rising and if they didn’t get help soon, they may die. I was drawn to this photo because I saw the words, “help” and “the water is rising.” After seeing these words I wanted to know what it was about and it made me feel very sad that no one was helping them and no one is bringing them to safety.

If I were taking these photos, I don’t think I would be able to separate my job from being human. I think this because if I saw someone in need I would want to help them otherwise I would regret it later, even if it meant losing my job. I think some struggles of being a photojournalist would be that you have to just stand by and take pictures instead of going to help the person in need. The only benefit might be that you have a good picture.

This is a picture from the 9/11 exhibit. This exhibit fit in with the rest of the Newsuem because it is something that happened in the past and it was a tragedy. The picture below is a picture of just a fraction of all the newspaper on the wall. The newspapers were all about 9/11 but from different cities perspectives. This was one of my favorite things in the exhibit but, my other favorite was a photographers possessions that died while taking pictures of the attack. I liked it because it taught me more about 9/11 so, now I know more about what happened.

Set in the Street

This past week in class we were doing a project called Set in the Street. This project was very fun to do but required tons of work. Set in the Street is basically a project where you build a wall and decorate in front of the wall to make it look like the inside of a house. You are supposed to do this in a random area and take a picture with a normal background still in it. Then, you are supposed to crop out the background so it looks like the picture was taken in an actual house. The first step was to build a wall. This required a lot of work because we had to get pieces of wood and hammer then together to create a 4×8 base. We then took drywall and placed it onto the base. We drilled it into the base so that it would stay in place and then we were done. We then painted the wall so it looked like an actual house. Finally, the last step was to drill and hammer nails and screws into all three wall that we made in order to make one big 12×8 wall. After we built the wall, we had to get furniture to put inside our “house.” So, we went up to the teacher’s lounge and got couches, chairs, tables, and bookcases. They were very heavy but, we brought them downstairs and put them in place. We then put the wall up by making wooden supports to hold up the wall. The last step was to put a few pictures up on the wall which me made by getting a picture frame and putting a picture of our school inside it and add a deck of cards and we were done! During this project I struggled with drilling the screws into the wood because I’ve never done it before. But, I found painting it very easy because that is something that I have done before.

I am thankful for my family for many reasons. One reason is that they are always there for me and they never let me down.  They are very supportive and caring. My family is loving and I am very thankful for them.

I am thankful for my soccer teammates because they are basically my second family. We win and lose together and no matter what we are always there for each other. They are very supportive and never bring me down if I make a mistake. They are who I spend a lot of time with and I am thankful for them.

I am grateful for my friends because they are always there for me even when i’m feeling down. They are hilarious and always make me laugh. I love being with them because they are caring, funny, smart, nice, and fun to be around.

I am grateful for my dog because she is adorable and always ready to cuddle. She goes right to me when I get home and gives me a ton of “kisses.” Even though she barks whenever we eat dinner I still love her because she makes me happy and brings more love into our family.

I am grateful for the beach. I am grateful for the beach because it’s very relaxing and it’s wear I spend time with my family and friends. I have tons of fun at the beach and I never get bored. I am thankful for my house because it provides me with shelter and keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Another reason is that it’s wear I spend quality time with my family and make tons of memories.

Rule of Thirds

In class this week we did a project called Rule of Thirds. For this project we were told to take at least one picture inside with people and one without and then one outside without people and one with people. To successfully take a Rule of Thirds picture you have to take a picture where there is something on each line of a grid. Rule of Thirds is when you align an object with the guide line and their intersection points. You then place the horizon on the top of bottom line. After we took all of our pictures we uploaded them to google drive and then downloaded them onto our computer. From there we edited them on Adobe Fireworks and and added our logo so that no one would steal our pictures. Finally, we uploaded the pictures on to google photos and created an album so that everyone can see the pictures that we took.

Light Graffiti

This week in class we are working on a project called light graffiti. To complete this project we were told to first take a camera and change the shutter speed to a longer time. We choose to do 15 seconds so we had enough time to complete the entire picture. During this project, we got many lights to shine on the people and the camera. When you shine a light on a person it makes them light up and when you shine it at the camera it causes whatever lines that you drew to show up. This only happens because the shutter speed is at a pretty high number. After we took all of our pictures we edited them on Adobe Photoshop and then uploaded them to google photos in order to share our pictures with our entire class. During this project, I found it hard to make sure that the person stood still so it wasn’t blurry and that there was no glare on someone’s face. However it was easy to change the shutter speed in order to take a good picture.

White photo project

In class this week we have been working on a project. In this project we were told to take pictures on white backgrounds. While taking the pictures we had to shine 2-3 lights on the background to make it an actual white background instead of white or yellow.  We also had to adjust the ISO, F-stop, and shutter speed in order to take this kind of picture. After taking the pictures we were told to download them onto our computers from google drive. We then were told to use the editing software Adobe Photoshop. On Adobe Photoshop we had to make the photo black and white so we lowered the saturation down to -100. After that we adjusted the picture to our liking using curves which is a way to change the lighting on Adobe Photoshop. The final step was to add our logo so that no one steals our pictures. We then uploaded it to google photos. During the process of taking photos I figured out that you need to have a ton of light on the background to make sure it’s white and not yellow or gray.

Infinite backgrounds

In class this week we have been working on a project. In this project we were told to take a picture on a black background. While taking a picture we had to shine a light on the person’s face to create a shadow. We also had to adjust the ISO, shutter speed, and F-stop in order to take this kind of picture. After taking the pictures, we were told to go onto the editing software Adobe Photoshop. On Adobe Photoshop we lowered the saturation down to  -100 so the picture would be black and white. After that we adjusted the picture to make the lighting just how we wanted it. Then the final steps were to add our logo and upload it to google photos. During the process of taking pictures I figured out that it didn’t work to be in a lighted room, and that you needed to be in a dark room. I also figured out that you need to try to shine a light in different places each time until you find the best spot for that person.

App Review

VSCO

https://vsco.co/

The app VSCO is great for editing and sharing photos. On VSCO you can edit your pictures by applying filters, cropping the photo, changing the lighting, etc.

After you edit your photo you can save it to your camera roll and/or upload it to your feed. Your feed is a place where you and your friends upload pictures for all of our followers to see. You can also republish pictures that someone else took and it will go to your collection. I enjoy using VSCO because it’s a great app to edit by pictures and I also enjoy looking at and republishing other pictures that my friends have taken.

BeFunky

https://www.befunky.com/

The website BeFunky is great for editing photos. On BeFunky there are many different options on how to edit your photo. For example, you can crop, resize, blur, adjust lighting, and much more! After editing your photo you have the option to save it to your computer, BeFunky, Facebook, Google Drive, or Dropbox. You can also share your photo on Facebook, Pinterest, Tumbler, and/or Twitter. Overall, I think BeFunky is a great editing app!
