#ProLevel

This whole semester, I’ve learned a lot about photography. We reviewed lighting, rule of thirds, composition, color, etc. My thoughts haven’t changed on photography, I’ve always liked it, and that’s why I chose to take this class. I’ve started to take photos with more of a creative touch and use the rule of thirds to frame the photo. When I grow up, I want to be a graphic designer, and photography is definitely part of that, so in a way photography will be my career.

7 Days

  1. The first picture in my thread is of my garden. I love being outside and helping nature flourish. Since I am vegetarian, I like to grow lots of fruits and veggies fresh. Growing a garden also benefits bees and other animals who need plants to live and thrive. The plants in the photo are my peony flowers and a mint plant.
  2. The second picture is of my cat, Panda. She’s 9 years old and a brown tabby. I’ve had her since I was in kindergarten and she is perfect. She follows me around like a dog, and she’s very cuddly. She likes to play with water in the sink, and she’s really good at tricks. Without Panda, I don’t know what I’d do, I love her so much!
  3. The third picture is of my horse, Fargo. He’s a 6 year old Percheron/TB horse. He’s the joy of my life and I love riding him. We’ve jumped 3’6 together and won 5th and 6th place ribbons in a show. He’s the coolest horse ever! 
  4. The fourth picture is of my grandma’s dog, Bailey. This picture represents my thankfulness for all dogs, not just Bailey. All dogs bring joy into so many people’s lives, and dogs deserve all the thanks in the world for it. Bailey is so cuddly and sweet, and I’m thankful for all the happiness she’s brought me and the other members in my family.
  5. The fifth picture is of my friends’ Gabri and Bella. Every time I see them they make me smile. We’ve had so many good times together and I’m very thankful for them. We always have fun running around taking pictures and going to see Ms. Phillip. I love messing around with them and can’t wait to make even more memories. 
  6. The sixth picture is of my smile. I had began going to the orthodontist in first grade. I had braces from 2nd to 7th grade. My teeth were my worst insecurity and having braces for so long was very painful. Now that my teeth are perfect, I’m very thankful for my bright, beautiful smile. 
  7. The final picture is of my computer keyboard. I am thankful for all technology, because without it, we wouldn’t be able to communicate, play games, and do everyday things like keep food cold in a refrigerator or heat it up. Technology is such a critical part of our lives its hard to imagine life without it.

Up Close

This project we were supposed to take pictures up close as to add a new perspective to our portfolios. I used the camera feature inside VSCO editor and used it’s focusing feature to make sure the objects up close were in perspective. I tried using my rule of thirds skills to frame the photo a little better too. If I used my normal camera, the subjects wouldn’t focus. It was difficult to  find subjects that other people hadn’t already used. If I had the right equipment, I would take pictures of my cat’s eyes up close.

So I Asked Them To Smile

The most difficult part of this project was getting people to make a serious face since everyone always assumes you want them to smile. I saw a lot of big differences, it’s almost scary.  You can tell in peoples eyes how they really feel and it’s cool to see peoples emotions change so fast. Bias can make the difference of whether you take a certain photo or not.  I think it’s important to ignore your personal bias. You should ask a client some background questions to get a good idea of what photos you should take.

Light Graffiti

In this project, we changed the iso and opened the shutter for a certain amount of time in order to capture the light. We went into the dark gym and got to work! We had to make sure that the light was facing the camera. The shutter would open for the amount of time we set it for (8-15 seconds) and we would draw. Writing words was the most frustrating part. We had to do our movements slowly and we had to think them out. If someone really wanted to, they could trace an entire scene with the light, if they left the shutter open for a very long time.

Newseum Post

My feelings for the first photo (Columbine Massacre) are extremely sad because you can see the hurt on the boys’ faces. I was drawn to the photos because of the strong  emotions the image puts off. My feelings for the second photo (Historic Campaign) are inspired because Obama seems very determined to be making the speech in the rain. I couldn’t be an intense photographer like this because I wouldn’t be able to help the people, just take photos. This is obviously one of the struggles of the job. The rewards could be in the happy photos you take.

The second exhibit I documented was the 9/11 Memorial Exhibit. My favorite part was the fact that you can write about your feelings on the event and submit them. 9/11 was an event that changed American history for good and I think it fits perfectly into the Newseum because of it’s significance. I think everyone should see this exhibit no matter how old in order to fully understand the horrific event altogether.

App Review – VSCO

VSCO is definitely the app for all your photography needs. The app features a built-in camera with features you could find on a professional camera. You have a lot of editing options including many filters and unique features. It also serves as a space to post your photos for others to see on your profile. It acts almost as a professional Instagram.

Rule of Thirds

In this project, we learned and applied the techniques to the rule of thirds. We had to make sure there was enough light to take a quality picture. Personally, I liked all my photos to be near the windows or outside. Once we found an ideal location we would find a good position on one of the thirds. I like using the rule of thirds because utilizing it always sets up the photo just right. In the picture of the fire alarm, the alarm is on the vertical left grid line. In the picture of Bella, shes standing in between the two grid lines, her head is on the top horizontal line.

White Background Portrait

In this project, we placed a subject against a back-lit white background and adjusted the ISO and shutter speed on the camera to let less light in. I thought the black background was easier because the lighting on this project was hard to perfect. Then we edited and cropped them in Adobe Photoshop. Leaving the ISO and shutter speed as it was didn’t work and the photos didn’t turn out. We found that the further we held the light from the person the better the photos were.
