Hi I am Sam. I am in 8th grade and I play for a travel soccer team. I'm dedicated to sports because I come from an athletic family. I play forward and right wide on my team. I am a very fast runner and I get my speed from my dad. My favorite subject in school is English because I like writing and reading. Starting 8th grade is exciting but scary because high school is right around the corner.

For the seven things im thankful for, I used pictures of family, friends and soccer. Im overly thankful for the people who support me most like all of my best friends and family members. Soccer makes me happy so im extremely thankful for the sport ive played forever.

This year during 8th grade photography, we completed many fun projects. In the beginning, we started out simple with doing a crayon project, then we went to portraits, light graffiti, rule of thirds, Set in the Street, I asked them to smile, Pulitzer photo, and the scavenger hunt. I edited the pictures with different apps and learned many useful tips during this class. I have gained knowledge on cool effects and camera settings, and I even learned how to manage my own website. This class was exciting and Im happy with the end results of the projects. The class was so fun and the freedom to be creative was great.

For this project, I went around the school and asked students if I could use them for a picture. In one of the pictures, I asked the student to make a straight face. In the next photo, I asked them to smile. This project shows how different a person looks when they were smiling. If gives a different perspective on the person who is smiling or who is not.

Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was my favorite exhibit because I liked the background of the wall. My grandpa is German and going home asking him about the wall, I gained much more information about the wall. The wall was colorful and filled with graffiti.

Hurricane Katrina

If I were to take this photo, Im not sure how I would control my emotions while observing all the suffering people. They have lost homes, possessions and even family members. One of the biggest struggles of being a journalist would be having that terrifying image in your head and remembering the people who have experienced this much loss and pain. If there is a reward, which is probably rare, is being able to tell how it felt to really be there. Being at the tragic disaster would be good and bad in ways.

World Trade Center Attack

This picture was the second plan hitting the world trade center. If I were to take this picture, again, Im not sure how I would keep myself together. Knowing something so horrible happened to such innocent people is so unsettling. The struggle would be watching the burning building burn and fall to pieces while there are so many workers that woke up thinking it was going to be a normal day at work. Honestly, in this case, I dont think that there was a plus or a benefit of being in New York, taking this picture.

Set In the Street

Set In the Street

In the “Set In The Street” project, our class had to split up into groups and we got right to building. We cut certain pieces of wood, made them specific sizes, and nailed/screwed the three walls together. When we started painting, my classmates and I had a roller and painted the three walls grey. The next day, we made final touches to the wall and headed near the gym doors. A couple students went up to the teachers lounge and got couches, coffee tables, a lamp, chairs, and even a bookshelf. We got books and accessories to fill the bookshelf and hung some pictures up on the walls. On the coffee tables, we put some cards and books to add the final touch to the living room. On arts night, we successfully had people come sit on the couches and chairs and took many photos.

Rule of Thirds

Rule of Thirds

For this project, my group and I changed the settings on our camera to have a grid appear. When we took pictures, we could place the object upon one of the lines on the grid. In these pictures, you’re supposed to give a certain amount of sky and a certain amount of grass and what not. One of the lines on the grid should be aligned with the horizon if you are outside.

Light Graffiti

Light Graffiti

In this project, my group and I used our phone flashlights and colorful papers to make letters. SR are my initials and everyone did their own creative idea. We used my camera to take these pictures. We changed the shutter speed to about 8 seconds and during those 8 seconds we used our lights to make our letters. We had to be careful to not light ourselves up in the pictures so we were unseen.

My group and I took portraits with white backgrounds and lights. We used Adobe Photoshop to edit the pictures and play with the curves.

Portraits

Portraits

In the process of taking these pictures, we used a black background in the studio and used bright lights near our faces. We used the manual setting on the camera and used the F-stop, shutter speed, and ISO. The lights that we put on the side below our faces had an affect on how bright the picture turned out. That was successful. For editing on Adobe Photoshop, we turned the pictures black and white and played with the curves to change the darkness and brightness of the photos.

This picture was taken by Tatum Goozh, my partner in crime. She used the same apps and process as I did.

App Review Phone

App Review Phone

Vsco is my favorite app because you have various filters. You can change the brightness and level of intensity. On Vsco, you can see other pictures that are edited and used for the apps website.
