#ProLevel

Overall my experience in photography was fun and educating. I had a good time being able to go off with my friends and take GOOD pictures. I used to think photography was easy but now I know there is a lot that goes into taking just one photo. I would consider photography as a backup career later in life I will not continue in high school because I want to try other things, but I may circle back around to expand my horizon in photography. My favorite project was the light graffiti. I liked being in the dark and trying new things with the cameras and lights.

7 Days

For this project I was tasked to go out and take pictures of seven things that I am thankful for within the span of seven days. We were supposed to do this with a positive mind because of all the negativity around us.

Action

See the rest of my photos here

What we were told to do for this project was find 8-10 things that were in motion and to capture them. We had to set the pictures up in a certain way so it wasn’t just a photo of something standing still. What I did was try to get a variety of angles with the shots so they all capture what is really happening in real life. For someone trying to take action photos, I would tell them not to stage the picture too much. If you try and get the perfect picture you will probably end up making the picture look like there isn’t any action. I am a swimmer and think that if I had the time and resources to do so, I would take action shots of people swimming, especially butterfly.

Up Close

What I needed to do was get close to at least 10 objects and really capture details that you would not see with the naked eye. What worked well was I got a lot of time to do this project and really do it well. It was pretty difficult to find interesting things to photograph. Many plants were cool but all of my pictures couldn’t be those. Also, with my phone camera, it doesn’t allow me to get as close as I would want. If i was a big photographer I would like to get close with animals and capture what they really look like.

Smile

The only difficulty with this project was finding 15 willing people to let me take a picture of. After that it was pretty much smooth sailing as far as editing and making the google slide goes. There are some people that if you look at them frowning you would think they were a completely different person from when they smiled. Bias could make being a photographer very hard. You may be in a place that you have been told is filled with bad people and that would make you more rigid and shy to take a picture of certain people and objects. To get a fair photo of my subject/client I would talk to them first about what they like, who they are and then I would set them in a scene that really captures the essence of who they are.

Light Graffiti

For my pictures I put the ISO on 100, the F5.6 and the shutter speed on bulb. For bulb, the shutter stays open for as long has you depress the button. The importance of having the shutter open so long for this is so the camera can trace the light and pick up the drawing. For the most part it was easy to draw with the flashlights. One of the harder things that didn’t work was that sometimes we couldn’t hold the light toward the camera lens. One of my frustrations was that I had a flashlight that was to bright and completely blew out the whole photo. To take this to the next level would be to go outside at night and trace objects in the real world.

Newseum

Photographs:

World Trade Center Attack taken by  Steve Ludum in 2001:

What drew me to the photo was that it was taken right after disaster struck in New York. This makes me think about all the people in the building that just experienced what just happened. I fell glad that I didn’t have to experience it first hand like so many others did.

Crisis in Haiti taken by Carol Guzy in 1995:

What drew me to the photo was the expression on this mans face. He looked frozen while all the chaos is going on around him. I feel like it would be a very difficult job to try and contain  what is happening.

Extra: I don’t think that i would be able to take some of these pictures that these photographers take. It would make me feel to bad that I am just standing by watching all this happen and only being able to take a picture of it. Even though it was my job, i wouldn’t be able to bring myself to take these pictures. The only reward as a photographer that I can think of is getting paid for your work but that still would not be enough for the emotional scarring that comes with it.

2nd Exhibit: The other exhibit I decided to visit was the 9/11 exhibit. The best part of the exhibit was the wall of all the newspapers that were let out the day after the disaster happened. They also had a mangled piece of the twin towers that was salvaged from the wreckage. It almost had its own level because there was so much to put in the exhibit. I liked it because it gave me the information in a new way that I hadn’t heard it before.

My Favorite Camera Apps

My favorite camera app on my phone is Snapchat. Snapchat is a social media app that works by communicating with time-sensitive photos. I like it because it gives me access to many filters and stickers to make my pictures look good.  I also like it because it doesn’t take up space on my phone unless I save the photos. I can send my photos to people and even create a story that lasts for 24 hours. Another reason I like Snapchat is because the pictures disappear after a certain amount of time so people can not bring them up later.  I also like that Snapchat links up with my Bitmoji so I can put little copies of “me” in there. My favorite photo app on the computer is Pixlr. Pixlr is a photo editing app on the computer that is really helpful and free. I use Pixlr to edit photos and make memes. With Pixlr you can use all the regular tools like paintbrush, crop, text, etc. I like Pixlr because it’s easy to use and I can get my photos edited quickly.

White Backgrounds

First we set the ISO to 640. We set the F stop to 5 which controls how big the lens gets to let light in.  We changed the shutter speed to 1/20 of a second. This was much easier than the black background because I didn’t have to do as much editing and we could get more pictures taken in less time. These pictures were the exact opposite of the black background portraits. We had to make the shutter speed so more light was let in instead. When we did the black background we had to let in as little light as possible and for this we need as much light as we can.  What worked was the lighting of the background because we didn’t have to be as concerned about it. What was hard was that we had such a big group to take pictures of.

Black Background

Taking these photos was a lengthy process. First, we needed to go to a place that was dark enough that the background wouldn’t be lit. To help with that  I had to set the ISO, Shutter speed, and F-stop so my camera wouldn’t let in too much light but enough for me to see the object. I had to have someone hold the light so that it lit the object as evenly as possible. Then, I had to take them into Photoshop to mess with the lights and dark so it was a full portrait.  It was pretty hard to light the object enough so that he would be clearly seen in the image. Also, it was hard getting the settings just right for the picture. The last thing that was hard was that we had to shoot most of our photos on the green background. What was easy was when we moved to the black background.
