Newseum

This was one of the Pulitzer Prize winning photos I saw when we went to the Newseum. It’s a Filipino family standing over their father’s casket. He had been killed by the government. This really made me think about what I would do and how I would feel if my dad was killed. I was drawn to this picture because the room they keep this photo in is very dark, and the red stood out to me, and I wasn’t sure what was in the picture until I saw it up close.

This is a picture of a soldier getting greeted by his family upon his return from Vietnam. It makes me think of a more extreme version of when my dad comes home from work trips, he’s a secret service agent and he travels all the time. It made me happy to see a feel-good picture like this among so many other darker pictures about war and famine and terrorism.

If I was taking these photos I would try in helping the people in these photos, which would be upsetting because sometimes there’s nothing you can do. That’s a downside to being a photojournalist, sometimes all you can do is take pictures. But, an upside is people will get to see your pictures well after you’ve left this earth, and that means you can still influence people’s lives after you’ve died.

My favorite exhibit was the Berlin Wall exhibit. I liked how they gave it it’s own wing and enough space for people to appreciate a real section of the actual wall. I also liked how they did give people a smaller chunk that they could touch. It was cool that you could see it from the back of the elevators sometimes.

Set in the Street

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been building our, “Set in the Street”. We got to build three 12 by 8 foot walls and then paint and sand them. This took about four or five days. They were our backdrop, we put a lamp in front of them and hung a picture on them to make them look more like normal living room walls.. We got a sofa, two coffee tables and a chair from the teacher’s lounge to furnish our, “Living Room”. Over the course of Arts Night, we took pictures of visitors posing in the seats, pretending to sleep, read, play cards, etc. I don’t really have anything to add about that, as I was sick and couldn’t attend. The next day, we took more pictures of ourselves pretending to do things in the seats.

Rule of Thirds

Over the past few days in class, we’ve had to take pictures using the rule of thirds. It was very difficult to find spots inside the school that had enough blankness that you could easily identify the subject of the photo without the photo being boring. It was also hard to align everything in the picture to be on one of the lines used in the rule of thirds. I changed the settings of the camera in my phone to add a grid to make this part easier.

Black Background Portraits

In class this week we had to take pictures of other students and then edit them on Photoshop. On the cameras we used manual setting to make the photos darker and changed the ISO, shutter speed, and F-stop. It was easy to get the image black and white (all you do is click one thing). It was hard to adjust how light or dark to make my photo, because if you make it too dark you can’t see the person, and if you make it too light you can see the green-screen in the background.

Light Graffiti

This week in class we made light graffiti. We achieved this by making the shutter-speed on our camera longer and moving lights from our phones to make shapes. We used different shutter-speeds for different shots, changing it from five seconds to ten seconds to fifteen seconds, which was the longest our camera could do. In the picture above we had Ansh lay down and not move, while one of us took the lantern that was there and carried around the circle to make a new circle out of light. I edited this picture and my other pictures on Adobe Photoshop to get the most satisfying picture.

Portraits

This week in class we had to take pictures of each other and edit them on Photoshop. When we took the pictures we changed the F-stop, ISO and shutter-speed to get the best looking picture. When editing via Photoshop, I turned my pictures black and white and played around with the curves to get what I thought were the best pictures.

24 Colors

In this project we had to match a whole box of crayons (there are 24 crayons in each box) to objects of the same color near our school and/or houses. Finding the exact shades of all the crayons was very challenging, especially finding all the different blues and reds. The easiest color to find a match with was black because there are black things all over the school (fences, computers, wires, etc) the hardest color to find was red violet because there aren’t many things that color in nature or in the school.
