Getting Close

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

For this assignment I had to take interesting photos of 10 different objects or materials. In order to get a good photo I had to get the focus on the right object, otherwise it would be blurry. Something that was difficult was finding the correct positioning of the object in order to create an interesting photo. Another thing that was hard was finding a good subject because if it was moving you had to make sure its focused and if its still you have to make sure the object is in focus and the background is more blurry. I think I would try to take a close up of a butterfly or some type of marine animal because I feel like those photos would be so pretty.

Catch the Action

In this project we had to take photos of objects and people in motion and one photo of an action stack just like the one above. When I took the photos I held down the camera button in order to get the whole shot. I looked for the best photo in the clutch and then used that photo. I think people trying to take these photos should learn to find good angles for the photo so you aren’t taking it from a straight angle. Also you should use an actual camera because they are better quality then a phone. I think I would want to take action shots of a soccer game. The perfect shot of that would to get the ball in the air or a person taking a throw-in.

Framing Your Subject

In this project we had to use objects in order to frame our subjects. In my photos I used fencing and pillars to frame my subjects. This project was much easier then the rule of thirds project because although I was worried about centering the subject I was able to use the rule of thirds background that I had in order to create my photos. Some of the challenges were finding good types of framing because some of the photos that I originally had took did not work because the framing wasn’t right.

Rule Of Thirds

In this project we had to use a 3 by 3 grid in order to correctly place an object or person. I had a hard time trying to get objects lined up with the lines of the grid. When I got it lined up the picture turned out good. In the beginning of this project I wasn’t excited but now I think it has truly helped me take better photos. When I was taking these photos I was looking for an interesting background that way it wouldn’t look bad.

Portraits with an Infinite Background

In this project we had to use a white background and we had to shine a spotlight on the background in order to prevent shadows. I think this project was very hard. We had to get the right angle in order to prevent having a shadow. Then when I was editing I liked the black and white pictures which is why I kept them all black and white. For some of the pictures I had to make their faces much less orange. For our pictures we had a much higher ISO and a much shorter shutter speed. Making sure the color wasn’t to blown out was more difficult because having a slower shutter speed would attract much more light to the photo.

In this project we had to shine all the light on the person in order to see the person since the main lights were off. In the project I found that using lower ISO and a slower shutter speed. I found that getting the light perfectly on the person was the most difficult.

One Object, 5 Shots

For this project I had to find at least 3 objects and I had to take five different angles of each object. One of these objects had to be a person. One of the challenges of this post was finding good angles. Another was keeping the object centered. I had a hard time with the chair just because it would spin all over the place which made it hard to keep centered. I think I will now have an easier time with centering objects because of this project.

24 Colors

This project was a fun way to test our skills by finding new and good angles of taking photos. Some challenges of this was finding all of the colors in the school without trying to do the same picture as someone else. I found it easier to find the angles depending on the placement of each of the crayons.

Last project!

This semester was really fun and educational. I learned a lot about techniques and how to take better photos. We did various projects over this semester including 7 days, Getting Close, Set in the Street, and many more. My thoughts about photography have definitely changed. Before I came to this class, I didn’t realize how important photography is in society. When we visited the Newseum, my friends and I spent a lot of time looking at the amazing Pulitzer prize pictures. I haven’t really changed the way I take photos, but now I know about the rule of thirds and I use it in taking pictures. My favorite project was the Getting Close project. I loved learning how to use VSCO to take pictures. I also enjoyed going outside and finding small/tiny things to take a picture of. Photography definitely interests me and I will continue to do it in high school. I love taking good quality pictures and learning different techniques for how to take better pictures.
