This semester was very fun. I got a lot better at taking pictures and getting ideas for pictures. I wish I could have photography all year. Also, some of my thoughts on photography has changed. I’ve realized how you can take really cool photos on you’re phone when before i thought you mostly had to use a professional camera. Now when I take photos, most of the time I use Rule of Thirds and the grid. My favorite project was probably Up Close when we did macro photography. I think the really close and focused photos are so cool and there is so many possibilities for photos. I really want to take photography next year in high school. I want to take it next year because I really enjoy photography, and I like having projects for photography because it gives me ideas.
Up Close
For this project we had to do macro photography. This is when the camera is really focused on something small. I used VSCO to take my photos and I put on certain settings like putting on a grid, white balance, and focus point. A challenge was getting the camera to focus up close. If I had the equipment, time, and ability to get there, I would want to photograph water and and sand. You can find the rest of my photos here.
Set in the Street
For this project we had to take pictures on the set, which was a kitchen table, and set up as scene for a photo there. This project is inspired by the photographer Justin Bettman‘s Set in the Street photos. the kitchen table set was inspired by Carrie Mae Weems and her Kitchen Table Project. The tools in Photoshop that I used were black and white, the marquee tool, feather, inverse, the cropping tool, and curves. If I could choose a place to tell my family’s story, I would choose our living room. The type of photos you would see are my family and I watching a movie or playing a game. You can find the rest of my photos here.
Catch The Action
For this project we had to take photos of people or things in motion. The photos had to be mostly clear and couldn’t be super blurry. It also had to be clear there was an action going on, and it couldn’t be staged. What I did to get good pictures is I used the burst feature on my phone. If something didn’t work, I would try again, and maybe in a different angle. Some tips I have for this project is to pick out a few good photos of an action so you have options and can better decide the best one. Another tip is to take photos outside. The photos always came out less blurry when they were taken outside. I would like to photograph people dancing or doing cool gymnastics tricks if I could. You can find the rest of my photos here.
7 Days
Photo 1: My Family
I’m thankful for my family because they support me and take care of me. I’m also thankful of how my family provides for us.
Photo 2: My books.
I’m thankful that I can own and read as many books as I want. In the picture are just some of the books I own. I know a lot of people can’t own a lot of books like I can, so I’m thankful that I can own so many.
Photo 3: Dance Team
In this photo I’m wearing my Danceworx jacket. Danceworx is the dance team I’m on. I’m very thankful I can be on a dance team. I’m also thankful I can be on a team with such amazing people and a team with an amazing coach.
Photo 4: My Dog
I’m thankful for my dog Lily. Even though she died, I’m still thankful for her. She made me happy and I had a lot of fun with her.I’m thankful I had such a good dog.
Photo 5: Baking
This is a photo of a chocolate chip cookies recipe. I’m thankful that I’m able to bake so much. I love baking, and I know not all people are able to bake a lot, or at all. I’m thankful that I can.
Photo 6: My cousin\
This is a photo of my cousin Meghan. She’s technically my second cousin, but we still call each other cousins. I’m thankful that I have someone in my family the same age as me and that I have a friend like her. I’m also thankful that I can talk to her about things, and that she can do the same for me.
Photo 7: Theater Friends
I’m thankful for my friends that I have at theater camp, something I do in the summer. I still talk to them, but only get to see them in the summer. I’m thankful that I have such great friends and that we still talk.
Smile
For this project we had to take photos of fifteen people, one where they’re smiling and one where they’re not smiling. the difficult part of this project was asking people to take their picture. The changes that i saw between the photos of people smiling and not smiling where smaller for some people, and bigger for others. Some, the person looked almost mean and very serious in their non smiling photo, but then looked very nice and a good person in the smiling photo. Bias could affect someones job as a photographer in many ways. They could miss some good opportunity’s because of bias against a certain type of people. As a photographer. you should ask your clients, or people you photograph, about their life, interests, and views, so you can make a fair judgement on them, good or bad, and take fair photos. most of all though, you should try and stay as neutral as possible. Light Graffiti
To take these photos we made went into the gym and turned off all the lights. We also set the shutter to take longer, usually 10 seconds. We then used flashlights to draw images. What worked was usually having multiple people draw things in the picture. What didn’t look as good was painting people in. What didn’t work was when the person in the photo moved after they were painted in. Different colored lights usually made the picture even better. Everyone worked together to come up with ideas for what to draw. You can find the rest of the photos here.
Rule of Thirds
For the Rule of Thirds project, what worked what having the grid up on my phone camera. This helped me use the rule of thirds. What didn’t always work was trying to crop a photo to work for rule of thirds. At first I thought rule of thirds wouldn’t make that big of a difference in my photos but it actually made them look better. I like using it. Rule of thirds is when two lines going down and two lines going across. The points where the lines cross is where you want the main focus of your picture. You can find the rest of my photos here.
Portraits
To take these photos we had to turn of all the lights and stand near a black background then have a light shining only on us (the person in the photo). What worked was having the light shining near the persons face. What didn’t work was having the light low. You can find the rest of my photos here.
Portraits
To take these photos, we had to adjust the ISO and shutter so the background of the photo will be completely white. After we took the photos, we edited them a bit in Photoshop to make sure there were no dark spots. What worked was holding the light on the background. What didn’t work was holding the light on the person or holding the light in the photo. You can find the rest of the photos here.
